Bringing Music to the Community for over a Century

Bristol Choral Society

is a leading Bristol choir with one thing in common — we are passionate about singing. We look forward to the buzz of our Wednesday evening rehearsals at the University of Bristol in Tyndall Avenue.

Bristol Choral Society is a mixed chorus of around 180 auditioned members with an age range of 15 to 70.

Under our distinguished Music Director, Adrian Partington and multi-talented Assistant Music Director, Steven Kings – who make a dynamic partnership – we expect and achieve high standards. We perform at least four concerts a year, usually at the Colston Hall, Bristol, with nationally renowned soloists and professional orchestras—often the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

Bristol Choral Society often receives invitations to sing outside Bristol—most recently from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus, and the BBC National Chorus of Wales. Many of the chorus enjoyed singing under the famous batons of Sir Charles Mackerras, Richard Hickox and Christoph von Dohnanyi at St David’s Hall, Cardiff, Symphony Hall, Birmingham and The Royal Festival Hall, London in 2007.

In February 2008, we were invited to join The Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus at the Royal Festival Hall in a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

We were delighted to end our season with the magnificent Bach B Minor Mass and renowned tenor soloist, Mark Padmore, at Bristol Cathedral in June 2008. Our accompanists were the acclaimed baroque ensemble, Music for Awhile.

Any good cook will tell you that your best chance of success is to start with first-class ingredients.

Mass in B Minor by J S Bach: Bristol Choral Society, Bristol Cathedral, 21 June 2008

It seems Bristol Choral Society took this advice to heart, because when it comes to choral works they do not come any better than this Mass.

There is no doubting the choir's commitment to their conductor Adrian Partington. The singers respond wholeheartedly to his instructions, occasionally a little too readily.

In the final Dona Nobis Pacem they blended splendidly, producing an uplifting finale.

The commitment of the orchestra, Music for Awhile, was equally strong.

I can't recall anyone being more attentive to the wishes of the conductor than the leader Margaret Faultless.

The orchestral soloists skilfully handled the complex accompaniment, giving vocal soloists Rebecca Rudge (soprano), Sebastian Field (countertenor), Mark Padmore (tenor) and Adrian Powter (bass) excellent support.

The appreciative large audience helped to support two Bristol charities, St Peter's Hospice and Brace.
