Assistant Music Director and Accompanist: Steven Kings
![]() |
We are very fortunate to have Steven Kings as our Assistant Music Director and Accompanist. Reading music at Cambridge, Steven initially studied the piano with Phyllis Palmer. He continued his piano studies with Terence Beckles at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has performed throughout the country as a soloist, accompanist and chamber musician—specialising in the music of the twentieth century. Steven also spent some years on theological research into the philosophy and psychology of religion, obtaining a PhD from Birmingham University. In 1996, he returned to work as a pianist and piano teacher in Bristol, giving a number of solo recitals and concerto performances, and being in constant demand as an accompanist. |
Between 1996 and 2000 Steven was accompanist to the University of the West of England Singers, and from 1999 to 2004 he was the conductor of the Cotswold Chorus. Since 2001 he has been working as Assistant Director of the BBC National Chorus of Wales, and in 2005 he was appointed Conductor of the Thornbury Choral Society.
Steven is also a prize-winning composer. In 2002 he composed a short piece for the Bristol Choral Society, "Haiku Mass", which was performed at our 2002 summer concert, and was shortlisted for a British Composer Award in 2003. He has received a number of commissions for both vocal and instrumental works.
